Bringing a graphic edge to Google Docs
report design - Pay what it takes
The Pay What it Takes (PWIT) initiative is a collective that supports changemakers and for-purpose organisations, by advocating and promoting a wider understanding of the financial commitment and funding practices needed to create lasting, positive change.
PWIT had a bare-bones (but nicely thought out) visual identity, but no precedent or assets for publication design. With a tight budget, it was another example of what I’ve seen as a growing trend in design – bringing visual hierarchy and flair to a Google Doc, instead of the classic full page layout and design process – plus the flexibility of a ‘live’ version right until the last minute.
I immediately sensed this was such a deep and diverse area that the typical quick-fix of free stock images would be neither authentic, nor relevant. So I doubled down on the geometric, graphic nature of the brand to create bold and textural solutions to help differentiate chapters and weave the branding throughout.
This won't win any design awards, but I deeply believe in the value of visual 'packaging' of weighty reports like this (even if in a hybrid-style), to help readers navigate and be inspired by the important content. Quite literally, 'making the purposeful more creative'.

*disclaimer – the report is not (yet) available as a hard copy, but I’ve presented it in mockup form here, in the hopes of creating a self-fulfilling prophecy – I'm a big believer in the impact of holding a physical printed item, especially with a publication of this size.
