PERSONAL PROJECT – CRAZY BLOODY GREENS

A documentary exploring the bond between an indigenous activist and “the world’s politest man”.

Crazy Bloody Greens is a 40-minute documentary exploring the lives and work of the co-leaders of the New Zealand Green Party. We follow them as they stand for their beliefs in a Covid-year election, facing acidic public opinion, and face the realities of COP26.

It was a unique opportunity as a filmmaker from inside New Zealand’s closed borders, shooting and editing in collaboration with filmmaker Paul Dodge, while working around periodic lockdowns.

The film evolved from a simple election-coverage idea to a deeper character portrait, with support and guidance from DocEdge and the DCEFF festival in the US. After overseas festivals, Crazy Bloody Greens was shown around Aotearoa New Zealand in 2023 at local Green Party events,

While the 2020 election shown in the film is now really ‘old news’, I believe in a few years as the characters move on to new things, Crazy Bloody Greens will find new life as a deeper, historical snapshot of New Zealand politics, something which is rarely captured beyond the typical news of the day.
