PRO-BONO – kiwis in climate

Guiding a fast-growing networking group from stakeholder research through to fledgling brand

Kiwis in Climate (KiC) is a professional network that connects and supports New Zealanders around the world who work in climate and sustainability-related fields.

An informal beginning in 2018 led to an ad-hoc period of growth for KiC. A membership of kiwi-expats in London grew to include New Zealanders back home in Aotearoa, and those working all around the world. Stakeholder research, done as part of my post-grad at The MindLab, revealed deeply intertwined, nuanced perceptions and needs from members, and an appetite for a more tangible, transparent and structured sense of direction.

My final change strategy sparked the formation of the group’s first ever leadership group (which I remain a member of) who for the first time defined values, purpose and kaupapa for KiC.

Our convenors group focuses on developing processes and strategy, fostering networking events and webinars, and empowering passionate members to create, consult and deliver their advocacy initiatives under the KiC brand.

The advocacy impact of KiC continues to grow, while staying faithful to the original purpose of sharing expertise, opportunities and ideas in a friendly, open group.

Unusually for me, there is not a lot to show in a creative context - yet. The fledgling brand and website are very much ‘minimum viable product’ – just enough to package advocacy initiatives and membership communications in a professional way, and present a consistent public-facing image when needed. But the impact of being part of the leadership group is a satisfying priority.
